Self-exclusion in Sweden
Sweden's Spelpaus.se is one of Europe's strictest exclusion registers. Every licensed operator must check it, and it covers all gambling that requires registration: online casino and betting, in-store betting, track betting and registered machine play. You choose 10 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or 'until further notice'. Crucially, an exclusion cannot be cancelled or shortened, and Swedish courts have confirmed that operators cannot override it. Fixed periods end automatically, after which accounts reactivate. The open-ended option runs for at least 12 months before it can be ended. Registration is free and done with e-identification. Spelpaus.se does not reach unlicensed sites, so pair it with bank and device blocks.

The steps

Get your e-ID ready
Spelpaus.se uses electronic identification: Mobilt BankID, BankID, Freja eID+ or an accepted foreign eID. Make sure yours works before you start.

Log in to Spelpaus.se
Go to the official Spelpaus.se site run by Spelinspektionen and log in with your e-ID. The service is free.

Choose the period
Pick 10 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or until further notice. The period is binding and cannot be shortened, so choose deliberately.

Confirm and check
Once you confirm, licensed operators must block you from gambling and from receiving direct marketing. If you can still log in and play with a licensed operator, report it to Spelinspektionen.

Add extra protection
Ask your bank about blocking gambling transactions and install blocking software. These tools also cover unlicensed sites that Spelpaus.se cannot reach.

When the period ends
A fixed-period exclusion ends automatically and your accounts reactivate. Before that date, consider whether to register a new exclusion; Stödlinjen can help you decide.

If you chose 'until further notice', you can end it only after at least 12 months, by logging in to Spelpaus.se with your e-ID.
Before you start — what to know
- Spelpaus.se covers all licensed gambling that requires registration, both online and land-based, including registered machine play.
- No exclusion can be cancelled early; this is set out in law and confirmed by the courts.
- Excluded players must also not receive gambling marketing from licensed operators.
- Lotteries bought without registration (for example, scratchcards paid in cash) may not be covered.
- Unlicensed sites do not check Spelpaus.se. Use bank gambling blocks and blocking software as extra layers.

Is online casino legal in Sweden?
Yes, through operators licensed by Spelinspektionen since 1 January 2019. Offering gambling to Swedish players without a licence is illegal.
Can I end a Spelpaus.se exclusion early?
No. Fixed periods run to the end, and the 'until further notice' option can only be ended after at least 12 months.
What is the gambling tax in Sweden?
Licensed commercial online gambling is taxed at 22% of gross gaming revenue, up from 18% since 1 July 2024.
Can I gamble with a credit card in Sweden?
No. Since 1 April 2026, licensed operators may not accept payments funded by credit cards, overdrafts, loans or buy-now-pay-later products.
