Step-by-step manual

Self-exclusion in Spain

Spain's national self-exclusion register, the RGIAJ (Registro General de Interdicciones de Acceso al Juego), is run by the DGOJ. Every licensed online operator must check it, and entries are shared with regional registers where the autonomous community has an interconnection agreement, extending the ban to casinos, bingo halls and other venues that check identity. Registration is open-ended: it lasts indefinitely until you ask to cancel it, which you can do only after six months. You can register online with an electronic certificate, through a mobile app using an electronic DNI, or on paper at public registry offices, post offices, National Police stations and Spanish consulates. It is free.

The steps

  1. 1

    Pick your channel

Register online through the DGOJ's electronic headquarters (sede electrónica) with an electronic certificate, through the 'DNIe autoprohibidos' Android app with a DNIe 3.0 and NFC phone, or on paper.

  2. 2

    Complete the RGIAJ form

Fill in the official RGIAJ registration form with your personal details. For paper applications, sign it and keep a copy.

  3. 3

    Submit on paper if needed

Hand in the form at a public administration registry, a post office (by registered administrative post), a National Police station or a Spanish consulate abroad. Have your DNI, NIE or passport to hand, and make sure the submission is date-stamped on receipt.

  4. 4

    What happens next

Once recorded, licensed online operators must block you, and venues in regions with interconnection agreements must refuse entry or prize payments where they check identity.

  5. 5

    Check your status

Request a certificate of your RGIAJ status through the sede electrónica; with a digital certificate it is issued instantly.

  6. 6

    Add extra layers

Install blocking software and ask your bank to block gambling payments, since unlicensed sites do not check the RGIAJ.

  7. 7

    Cancelling the ban

The ban is indefinite. After six months you can request cancellation, but only through the DGOJ's registry. Consider talking to FEJAR or your treatment team first.

Before you start — what to know

  • RGIAJ registration is indefinite; cancellation can be requested only after six months.
  • All DGOJ-licensed online gambling is covered. Land-based coverage depends on regional interconnection agreements; elsewhere a regional register may need to be used too.
  • Some regions maintain their own land-based registers; check with your autonomous community.
  • FEJAR associations can help you complete the registration.
  • Unlicensed sites do not check the RGIAJ. Use bank blocks and blocking software as well.
