Self-exclusion in Austria

Austria does not yet have a national self-exclusion register. Today, you ask each operator to ban you: Casinos Austria for its land-based casinos, Österreichische Lotterien for its online platform win2day, and individual sports betting or slot-machine operators licensed by the provinces. Casinos Austria and win2day share player-protection processes within the same group, but private betting firms and arcades operate separately. The 2026 reform draft would create a national, cross-operator and cross-product exclusion register covering casinos, slot venues and online gambling, plus centralised deposit limits. Until it is in force, combine operator bans with blocking software and bank blocks.

The steps

  1. 1

    List where you gamble

Note every casino, online platform, betting shop, betting site and slot arcade you use; each must be contacted separately.

  2. 2

    Ban yourself from win2day

Log in to your win2day account and use the player-protection settings to set a self-ban, or contact its customer service in writing.

  3. 3

    Ban yourself from casinos

Visit or write to Casinos Austria and request a Spielersperre. Bring or attach a copy of official photo ID; the ban is checked at entry.

  4. 4

    Cover betting and arcades

Ask each provincially licensed bookmaker and slot-arcade operator for a self-ban. Rules and minimum periods differ by province and operator.

  5. 5

    Block unlicensed sites

Many foreign online casinos target Austria without a licence. Install blocking software and ask your bank about blocking gambling payments.

  6. 6

    Get support

Contact Spielsuchthilfe or your provincial addiction service for free counselling.

  7. 7

    Ending a ban

Each operator sets its own rules for lifting a ban, often involving a waiting period and a conversation with its player-protection team.

Before you start — what to know

  • No national register yet: one request does not cover all operators.
  • The reform draft would introduce a national, cross-operator self-exclusion register and central deposit limits.
  • Sports betting is regulated by the provinces, so protections vary across Austria.
  • Unlicensed online casinos do not honour Austrian bans; blocking software adds protection.

Frequently asked questions

Is online casino legal in Austria?

Currently only through win2day, run by the monopoly holder Österreichische Lotterien. A reform to license private online casinos was in the EU notification process in late 2026.

Why is sports betting regulated by the provinces?

Austrian federal law treats sports betting as a game of skill, not gambling, so it falls under the nine provinces' betting laws.

Can players get money back from illegal casinos?

Austrian courts have repeatedly allowed players to reclaim losses from operators without an Austrian licence. Seek legal advice for individual cases.

Is there a national self-exclusion register?

Not yet. The 2026 reform draft would create one; until then you must ask each operator.

Procedures can change. Always follow the instructions of the official scheme or regulator. We2Bet is not affiliated with any self-exclusion scheme. Last reviewed October 2026.
